About BST
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, BST® pioneered the application
of behaviour-based performance solutions in the field of safety. Three
factors contributed to the development of behaviour-based safety:
- Academic psychologists began research on behavioural techniques
for accident prevention.
- Procter and Gamble used behavioural principles to manage safety
corporation-wide.
- In 1979, Dr. Tom Krause, a psychologist, and Dr. John Hidley, a
physician, founded BST® and pioneered the application of behavioural
methods in industrial settings with emphasis on practical issues facing
the managers charged with implementing this new approach. This integration
resulted in the Behavioral Accident Prevention Process® technology,
or BAPP® technology.
BST®'s Transition to Employee-Driven Safety
The mid-1980s saw a high rate of growth for BST® as the company
was recognised as the leader in the field of behaviour-based safety.
To this day BST® has sustained its position of leadership. The
"secret" of this growth was a shift from management-driven
safety to employee-driven systems for safe behaviour. In the mid-1980s
while working with companies committed to TQM principles, BST®
discovered how to use meaningful involvement to move ownership for
safety throughout the organisation.
The response to this employee-driven process is impressive. For instance,
the 2008 Annual BST® Users Conference drew over 2,600
participants - wage-roll personnel, supervisors, and managers. Since
1987, BST® has supported more than 2,300 implementations across
many industries and in 60 countries worldwide. At over 90%, the success rate is unparalleled.
On average, sites see a reduction of 25% in recordable injuries
in the first year with continued reductions in subsequent years.
BST®'s Expansion Beyond Safety
In the 1990s, BST pioneered the application of this uniquely effective
performance improvement technology to areas beyond safety. The approach
has been applied to the areas of Quality and Customer Service with
similar success to that seen in safety, as:
- targeted performance behaviours improve, and
- related elements of culture are strengthened
At the same time BST® developed a way to complement employee-driven
behaviour-based performance improvement with methods to enhance
manager and supervisor leadership qualities. Using BST® technologies
to focus on key management practices, BST client companies have
realised additional improvement opportunities.
BST® Today
BST®'s behaviour-based methods for performance improvement are
