Behaviour Based Safety &
Other Behavioural Performance Improvement Interventions
Behaviour Based Initiatives is the South African Associate
of Behavioral Science Technology, Inc. (BST®). BBI was started
in 1997 by Leo Strydom, formerly of Sasol, and Managing
Director of NOSA. BBI currently has participation agreements with
independent consultants, who participate in the South African
market as Associates of BBI.
In 1979, Dr. Tom Krause, a psychologist, and Dr.
John Hidley, a physician, founded BST and pioneered the application
of behavioural methods in industrial settings with emphasis on practical
issues facing managers charged with implementing this approach (later widely accepted as Behaviour Based Safety).
The integration of best practice methodologies with practical experience resulted in the Behavioural Accident Prevention
Process® (BAPP®) technology.
The response to the employee-driven process is
impressive. Since 1987, BST has supported more than 2,600 implementations
across many industries and in regions throughout the world. The 90%+ success rate
is unparalleled. Sites see an average reduction of 25%+ in
recordable injuries in year 1 with continued reductions
in subsequent years.
In the 1990s, BST successfully applied this
uniquely effective performance improvement technology to areas beyond
safety, such as Quality and Customer Service.
At the same time BST developed a way to complement
employee-driven behaviour-based performance improvement with methods
to enhance manager and supervisor effectiveness. Using BST technologies
to focus on key management practices, BST client companies have
realised additional improvement opportunities. Typically an organisation's
culture is analysed, and key areas for improvement are identified. Specific interventions are designed and implemented. These
interventions are mainly based on diagnosing leadership behaviour in terms of seven proven leadership best practices and four elements of transformational style, assisting leaders to improve their behaviours and skills, and the employee-driven Behavioural Accident
Prevention Process®.
BST's behaviour-based methods for performance improvement
are at work world-wide. With a full-time staff of over 150 employees,
they offer an unparalleled range of resources for behaviour-based
performance improvement including consulting services, seminars,
conferences, books, and software.
Some major projects awarded to BST are the improvement of the
management and safety culture at NASA, prior to returning to flying
manned spacecraft, and assisting a major oil company to achieve outstanding safety performance on construction project. |
